In Rochester, NY’s Seneca Park Zoo there are four female African elephants. Genny and Lilac have been there since 1979, and Moki and Chana arrived in 2015 after being transferred from Jacksonville, Florida.
I remember adoring the two elephants as a child but always feeling sad they didn’t have grass. Fortunately, in 2006, the zoo greatly expanded their outdoor area and later added a splash pool. It’s still far from ideal, but it has improved.
The zookeepers regularly present information to school groups and families. One interesting fact is that an elephant drinks fifty gallons of water a day and eats three hundred pounds of food.
It is rare to have elephants in a zoo, and Seneca Park is the only zoo in NY housing African elephants.
