Music for Elephants

Jenny Kendler, an artist in residence for the Natural Resource Defense Council, created a ten minute song to raise awareness about the plight of elephants.  Entitled “Music for Elephants: A Eulogy for the Future”, the song is done on a restored 1920s piano, with real ivory keys.

The Museum Of Contemporary Art in Chicago exhibited the piece.  Ms. Kendler studied the statistics and used data to correspond to the notes in the music; each note corresponds to one month of data. Analyzing the data, she modeled the future for the elephant population.  Higher notes indicate a decline in poaching incidents, lower notes represent elephant deaths, and when the piano falls silent, the listener realizes elephants will have become extinct.
