Stopping online ivory sales

The International Fund for Animal Welfare was a crucial organization in the effort to stop online ivory sales.  In 2009, it successfully got eBay to ban ivory.  This was a huge victory, since the auction site has a worldwide market that does billions of dollars of transactions.

Yet, perhaps even better, alibaba has now agreed to ban ivory sales.  Alibaba is a Chinese firm that is now the largest trading platform in the world.  As I have discussed on this blog, China has long been one of the main markets for ivory products.

The IFAW also provides support and supplies for rangers, and it partners with INTERPOL’s environmental crime program.
