A royal elephant, Namsai, has a deadly virus. She is only three years old. Although she will receive treatment, she is not expected to live. She has the EEHV herpes virus, and the way she contracted the illness remains unknown. Namsai lives in the Kolmardens Djurpark just outside Stockholm, Sweden.
Her mother was a gift to the Swedish king, Carl XVI Gustaf, by the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand. Her father also is a royal elephant – a Thai gift to the royal family of Denmark.
What sad news! This little calf is a highlight of the zoological park, and loved by many children. Here’s hoping her treatment defies expectations, and Namsai lives a long life.
